Our Visit to Aazhimala Shiva Temple nearThiruvananthapuram in Kerala

Our Travel Diaries - Series
During our Kerala tour in Mar 2025, our journey took us to the Aazhimala Shiva temple with the vast stretch of shores of Arabian Sea as the backdrop. It was a perfect blend of spiritual and natural serenity which made it a truly unforgettable family travel moment .

Day 6 of our Kerala Tour

On Day 5 of our tour, we had a very long drive from Munnar to Kovalam and by the time we reached the beach resort, it was around 8.30 p.m. After a tiresome day, we went to sound sleep, got up a bit late the next morning and had hot cup of coffee enjoying the beautiful view of Arabian Sea from the balcony. My daughter was glued to the balcony and she didn't feel like coming inside, so beautiful the sea view was from the balcony.

Well, after refreshing and having breakfast we started for this lesser known temple called the Aazhimala Shiva temple. It is less than half-an-hour drive from Kovalam towards the south.
We reached the place by 8.30 a.m and it was told that darsanam will open at 9 a.m. after naivedyam. On entering inside we were awestruck at the Gigantic statue of Shiva with the vast stretch of Arabian Sea as a backdrop. For a moment we felt as if the temple greeted us with the roar of the Arabian Sea and the serene presence of Shiva. The place was full of tourists who were admiring the beauty of the place and engrossed in clicking pics and video shooting. The temple premises is small, yet the backdrop of the temple with vast stretch of Arabian Sea, rocks and coconut trees are really astounding.

The Majesty of Sree Gangadhareshwara

The gigantic statue of Shiva with hair spread all over and a small statue of Ganga Devi in the matted lock of Sree Gangadhareswara, enhanced the natural beauty of the place. The statue of Gangadhareswara with Arabian Sea backdrop radiating power and compassion, is the main attraction of the place which makes one speechless. All the visitors were glued to this place capturing the beauty of nature and divinity. At this place we felt as if we were dwarfed not by gigantic size of Shiva but by the cosmic story that is embodied in it. It gave us the felling that literally, we are nothing in front of Him.

Aazhimala Shiva temple - A Divine Landmark by the Sea

It is one of the most beautiful coastal temples of Kerala, located near Thiruvananthapuram. This 100 year old temple is famous for its scenic coastal beauty and the towering Shiva statue that has become the pride of the region. The moment devotees step into the temple, magnificent Gangadhareshwara instantly captures their attention. One can see the beauty of the endless stretch of Arabian sea which is enhanced by the towering statue of Gangadhareswara. The temple is a fine blend of simplicity and grandeur.

Our Temple Experience

We immersed ourselves into the coastal spirituality at this place. We too strolled in the temple premises for a while admiring and capturing nature's beauty. There is only one minus point to mention here which is the rocky floor that was extremely hot even at 10 'O' clock in the morning. Walking barefoot in the premises is something unbearable. However, there is a long running mat which gave a bit solace. In spite of extreme heat, people were busy clicking and shooting.

When we entered inside, darshans were closed as it was time for 'naivedyam'. The devotees strolled inside the temple premises and were busy in their own way. When darshan was open we lined up and had nice darshan of Sree Aazhimala Mahadeva. After spending some time in the extremely hot weather clicking and shooting, we drove through narrow lanes of a small typical Kerala style village and reached Poovar backwaters where we had a memorable boat ride.

The temple maintains a simple, traditional Kerala - style ambience. The peaceful atmosphere at this place brings a rare calmness and the rhythmic roaring of the waves elevates our spiritual mood. The view of vast stretch of seashore was too impressive and someone told that we can have a distant view of Kanyakumari as well, from this place. Don't know how far it's true. Visitors after having the darshan of Sri Aazhimala Shiva, are lost in their own worlds. Some clicking / capturing memories of the place, some taking selfies while others soaked in deep meditation. At this place, nature, culture and divinity are in perfect harmony. However, there is no strict dress code in this temple unlike other temples in Kerala.

After refreshing our souls we stepped out in the hot weather and proceeded to the next destination - the much awaited Povar boat ride in the backwaters for a typical Kerala experience.
